@Anonymous "I'm fourteen and I find monastic life very appealing, maybe for the wrong reason, which is to get away from people and society. I'm currently a scholar with grades going down the drain because of my laziness. I have no idea why I'm telling you about this; I guess it's because I'm wanting to be an Augustinian nun and find the story of how God's love found St. Augustine very inspiring as it gives me hope that someday I'd wake up too."
God Bless you.
Augustine had something very profound to say, and I think you owe yourself a bit of credit that God is already working your life. When I was your age, I was a lot worse. Religious life was the last thing on my mind. I only woke up when things could not get any worse, and I probably missed out on many opportunities. It was never too late, however, for God’s love and mercy in my life. God is probably drawing you to a deeper more genuine discipleship at the very least.
I think the calling to a convent is a very beautiful and wonderful thing, and its rarity only makes it all the more precious. It is a calling to configure oneself to the Paschal Mystery of Christ, to his death and Resurrection, to the Trinitarian life, to love and service to our sisters and brothers, and to manifest glorious heavenly joy in a world wrought in wicked injustice and cynicism.
So in other words, it is a big deal, and if you wanted to escape anything, you would be running into a tremendous responsibility that would soon cause you to cave in. If you were called, you would be filled with God’s grace, and radiate such a tremendous beauty and courage, as you flow with the life of the Spirit, and the action of Christ in the world, that it would feel natural, despite it not necessairly being easy or comfortable.
So fourteen year old princess of God, I will say a prayer for you. I hope you can take the responsibilities you have before you very seriously. I hope you can have an awareness of God’s loving presence in your life as you face the challenges of the world, challenges you will never face alone. Most of all, I pray and hope, that as you grow you may one day have the open courage and sincerity to follow where the Spirit draws you, should that be in a convent or not.
Oh, Happy Valentines Day, and smile, Jesus loves you!
